Many people believe that memory loss is an inevitable part of growing older. While it is normal for ageing to cause occasional forgetfulness, dementia is not a normal part of ageing. Healthy ageing may involve taking a little longer to recall a name or occasionally misplacing everyday items. However, these memories are usually recovered later and do not interfere with daily life. Dementia is different. It involves a progressive decline in memory, thinking, reasoning, language, and the ability to carry out everyday activities. People with dementia may repeatedly ask the same questions, become confused in familiar places, struggle to manage finances or medications, have difficulty finding words, or experience changes in behaviour and personality. The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s disease, but other conditions such as vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia can also lead to cognitive decline. Recognising the difference between normal ageing and dementia is important because some causes of memory problems are reversible, while others benefit from early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and supportive care. Greater awareness helps reduce stigma and encourages a better understanding of cognitive disorders affecting older adults.
