Empathy does not mean agreeing with someone, approving of their choices, or feeling exactly what they feel. It means making an effort to understand their emotional experience from their perspective. A person may be anxious, angry, hurt, or disappointed, and we can acknowledge those feelings without necessarily sharing their views. Validating emotions is not the same as endorsing beliefs or actions. Often, people need to feel understood before they can consider solutions. True empathy replaces judgment with curiosity and connection. It allows us to listen more deeply, communicate more effectively, and build stronger relationships. In mental health care, empathy creates a safe space where people feel heard and respected. Understanding another person’s emotional reality is one of the most powerful ways to support healing and growth. Dr Aditya Patil Consultant Psychiatrist
