There is no single test that can diagnose every type of dementia. Dementia diagnosis usually involves combining information from several assessments to understand changes in memory, thinking, behaviour, and daily functioning. The evaluation may include: • Detailed history of memory and cognitive symptoms • Information from family members or caregivers • Assessment of daily functioning and behavioural changes • Memory and cognitive tests • Physical and neurological examination • Review of medications and medical conditions • Blood tests to look for potentially reversible causes • Brain imaging such as MRI or CT when clinically indicated Doctors may also assess for conditions that can resemble or worsen dementia, including depression, delirium, thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 deficiency, sleep problems, medication effects, and other neurological illnesses. Cognitive screening tests can help identify difficulties with memory, attention, language, orientation, and executive functioning, but a test score alone does not establish a diagnosis. The purpose of a comprehensive memory loss and dementia assessment is not only to determine whether dementia is present, but also to identify its likely cause and distinguish it from other conditions affecting cognition.
