OCD vs OCPD: They sound similar, but they’re not the same. Many people think OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) and OCPD (Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder) are the same, but they are very different. In OCD, people experience unwanted intrusive thoughts and feel compelled to perform repetitive behaviours—such as checking, washing, counting, or seeking reassurance—to reduce anxiety. Most people with OCD know these thoughts and rituals are excessive but find them difficult to control. In OCPD, the main features are perfectionism, rigidity, and a strong need for control. Unlike OCD, people with OCPD often believe their way of doing things is the correct way and may not see their behaviour as a problem. Being neat, organised, or detail-oriented alone does not mean someone has OCD or OCPD. If you or someone you know has intrusive thoughts, repetitive checking, excessive washing, perfectionism, or anxiety that interferes with daily life, a psychiatric assessment can help identify the cause and guide the right treatment.
