There is no single test that can diagnose every type of dementia. A dementia assessment usually combines several evaluations to understand memory, thinking, behaviour, and daily functioning. Common tests include: • Cognitive tests – assess memory, attention, orientation, language, and problem-solving • Blood tests – may identify thyroid problems, vitamin B12 deficiency, infections, or metabolic abnormalities • Physical and neurological examination – evaluates movement, coordination, reflexes, and neurological signs • Brain imaging – MRI or CT scans may detect strokes, brain atrophy, tumours, or other structural changes • Neuropsychological assessment – provides detailed testing of different cognitive abilities when required • Daily functioning assessment – evaluates whether cognitive changes are affecting independence Tests such as the MMSE and MoCA are commonly used cognitive screening tools. However, a low score alone does not confirm dementia, and a normal score may not always exclude early cognitive impairment. A comprehensive memory test and dementia evaluation considers test results together with symptoms, medical history, medications, and changes in everyday functioning.
